The Film Detective does it again with the release of THE OTHER SIDE OF MADNESS, a 4K transfer from the negative of the film that covered the shocking crimes of the Manson family.  It will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on November 24th and it is an incredible film that has been restored beautifully.

Directed by Frank Howard and produced by Wade Williams, the film was made very close to the time of the events and it has very trippy and ominous feel all around.  I have watched just about every documentary and movie about Charles Manson and the Manson family murders and this film is the most unsettling and really got the point across.

The contrast between the upper class of Hollywood and the hippy lifestyle is done incredibly well.  Showing the two worlds in such great and accurate from brings home the point and gives some insight into the Manson family and Charles Manson.  The hippy free-love lifestyle was manipulated into this cult and was targeted at those that had things and lived well.

This is an incredible film, with a very unique approach that proved incredibly effective.  Frank Howard understood how to build the story, brick by brick, and show the events that led to the slaughter that shook the entire world.  This film is so impactful that you almost forget you’re watching a film.  It’s got a certain realism to it and, after watching it, I was pretty tense.  I can’t say enough about how good this film is.

The Film Detective release of this film on Blu-ray is a collector’s must have.  It comes in a black Blu-ray case, which just looks sharp.  The cover art is great with Manson glaring directly at you and it comes with a CD (limited release of 2000 copies), which features some music performed by Charles Manson.

The Blu-ray is loaded with special features, including a booklet and the CD I’ve already mentioned.  There’s a bonus featurette, a documentary and much more.  This is a must own and it really impressed me.
