The Other Hell (1981) – Movie Review

Two nuns stand in a Dr. Frankenstein style laboratory within the convent that they work for. They stand beside a nun that has died and they are about to embalm her. She lay naked on a table before them when one sister grabs a knife and starts slicing away. She mutilates the woman’s body saying it was because the woman had succumbed to evil temptation and became pregnant with the devil’s baby.

The nun is seemingly possessed when she reveals a corpse of an old nun and states that nun had been murdered by another member of the church and was back for revenge. Suddenly the lights go off and a fire forms out of nowhere. It becomes clear that a possession takes hold of the nun when she begins beating her colleague in sheer delight.

Later Mother Superior Vincenza (Franca Stoppi) comes in the lab and seems almost bored by the carnage. With bloody dead nuns everywhere, it’s amazing that Vincenza tells the convent with a straight-face that it was all an accident. She tells them that Father Inardo (Andrea Aureli) will be coming in to ask a few questions as a formality and nothing else.

Immediately, paranormal oddities start to occur at the church. Inardo is told that the devil is now in heaven and they are forced to worship him. Hmmm…a hostile takeover – sexy.

Later in his rectory, the demonic force makes its presence known by flashing some more fire and explosive lights. As evidence of stigmata, kidnapping, murder and possession run wild Inardo tries different techniques to rid the convent of evil. He even brings in fellow priest Valerio (Carlo De Mejo) to figure out what’s going on.

Valerio is more scientifically minded and thinks the nuns were murdered. He meets great resistance from Vincenza in his efforts to investigate. He soon comes across a secret long buried in deepest darkest corner of the basement inside of the convent.

This movie is fun and crazy. Despite it having no sex and a muddled story, it’s compellingly told and cast remarkably well. I like the way it’s shot and directed. It reminds me of weekend afternoons when TV had balls and would show this type of flick all the time.

I wish we had a few nun BDSM orgy scenes with Vincenza in command, but no such luck. To see what’s under Franca Stoppi’s habit, you need to venture over to YOUTUBE and check out BEYOND THE DARKNESS (1979). There she seduces a much younger and very psychotic man in the most amazingly naughty ways. She’s just makes me crave all sorts of dark, sultry, bad things.

In the end, I recommend this. It isn’t the best of the era or the ilk, but still it is a far more decent entry into nunsploitation than all of the low-budget current ripoffs of the new THE NUN (2018)movie combined.
