Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just released SUPERNATURAL: THE COMPLETE TWELFTH SEASON on DVD and Blu-Ray, featuring 23 episodes, four hours of bonus content and much more, including some commentaries and mythology featurettes.

The 12th season picks up where the last season left off, with Toni Bevell taking the kidnapped Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) to a veterinarian to treat a gunshot wound. We see the further adventures of Sam’s brother Dean (Jensen Ackles), as he finds his dead but resurrected mother, Mary Winchester. The newly reunited couple go in search of Sam and the two brothers remain the focus of this season and remain a very compelling duo.

The show’s atmosphere is spot on, with various creepy moments that are done very well. Sam, Dean and their mother investigate the deaths of small children at one point and tone is set quite well, along with this aura of mystery that surrounds the situation and as they unravel the past, it gets more interesting. There are various surprises along the way and this is why this show has continued to flourish. It’s written very well and it keeps that sort of cliffhanger approach with not only the episodes but also during the episodes. It makes you think.

References to other seasons prove that this show has not forgotten where it’s come from and tries to leave no loose threads. At one point, Nazi necromancers, which were initially introduced a few seasons before, return to resurrect Adolf Hitler in one of the better episodes of the series. Everything seems to be thrown at the viewer in this series but it doesn’t come off as ridiculous as you’d think. It’s done so well that I can buy that we have werewolves and Hitler returning from the grave. We also have Lucifer returning from hell as well. There is plenty of chaos for the Winchester family to contend with and the series just keeps moving at this brisk pace.

SUPERNATURAL goes for different approaches at different times, ranging from very intense to comedic. There are twists on top of twists, making this a very layered show with plenty of thought put into the execution. It’s just a smart show that is very easy to binge watch and that is what’s going to happen to those that pick up the series. I watched very little of this show before I sat down to view the 12th season, and it was very easy to get into and move onto the next episode. I highly recommend this show and series.

The Blu-Ray set presentation is quite good, with each show looking very sharp and it gives you enough extras to keep you busy for quite a while. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment didn’t leave much out, if any at all. This is the way that you should probably watch the show.
