Scary Tales (2014) – Horror Anthology Review

By Chris Summerfield

So movie Anthologies, the first one that comes to mind that is very old is of course, 1945, ‘Dead of Night’. As for the most likely ones that come to mind are of course, ‘Creepshows’ and the many Amicus movie, anthologies, all of which deliver, short and interesting stories that would last no more than thirty minutes per story and would be as entertaining as each other, and it can be very difficult to create such good anthologies.

Now, Geno McGahee, the mastermind behind, the fun, but dark demon movies, ‘Evil Awakening’ and ‘Rise of the scarecrows,’ in which I am a huge fan of, has decided upon tackling the Anthology Genre, in which this one is his fourth movie release after let’s not forget the compelling and dark mystery type horror, ‘Family secret,’ and without doubt pulls it off creating another classic movie to his growing collection.

So let’s take a brief look at the movie…

Tim, (Tim Pieciak) invites three of his high school buddies of yesteryear to his isolated cabin in the woods, there is as follows, Susan, (Jaki Valensi-Lauper) Butch, (Forris Day Jnr) and Wendy, (Kate Lago) no idea why they are going but all have fond memories of their youth and feeling a little bruised with middle age.

Time for storytelling to cheer them up, tales of supernatural and mystery…

‘The Bully’

Tim is the first to go… He tells the story of a brutal, compassionless, bully named, Richard, (Bill Boughton) who beats a man to death, then gets fired from his job and finds his girlfriend had walked out on him.

A mysterious guy (Mike Lauper) suddenly appears and offers Richard a proposition, play a game with him or face the music, as Richard will be facing murder charges.

The game?

Richard, simply has to beat this guy at a fist fight, should be simple for a guy who has spent his whole life bullying and assaulting people…. Or will it?

Butch is the next to speak…

‘Curiosity Kills’

Amber, (Leeann Aubuchon) and Mike (Josh Tienson) find themselves in a serious situation that could have serious consequences and therefore have to go on the run.

They eventually find themselves heading to what appears to be a deserted house, in which a strange girl and her sinister mother, May, (Charlotte Lewis), live and convinces their guest to remain for the night, however there is more to May and her family than first thought… A son and dead husband leads to a very dark finish…

Susan’s story is next…

‘Majority rules’

A card game is to be held, well more of a scam to gain $20.000 from a wealthy casino owner Mark, (Brent Northup).

Steven (Steven Joseph Adams) is the head of the poker cheats, with a reluctant, Phil (Richard Smith) and Jamie (David Sauriol) all of which have carried out this sort of scam before however this being the first time for such a huge amount of money…

Mark though sees through the scam and demands $80.000 off them or threatens on calling in the police…

Steven therefore deciding they should kill him in order to take the money. And it seems they may have gotten away with murder, but revenge from the grave is on the cards…

And then final story from Wendy,

‘The Bridge’

Bill (Logan Lopez) returns to his home town seeking inspiration regards writing an article, his dying grandpa, speaks of the devil’s bridge, a local folklore, so therefore Bill decides to investigate along with girlfriend, Susan, (Crystal Aya) and of course a paranormal researcher Denise, (Sarah Surprenant). Denise reveals a very dark past regards the bridge, in which is also known as ‘Titanic bridge.’ And it appears the bridge holds secrets regards tragedies within Bill’s family.

To cross the bridge could lead to a life changing experience, for the worst, Bill discovers this with bloody consequences…

And finally, Tim as one more tale to tell and it sure is a sinister one…

It leaves me to say, I do hope I have not given too much away regards this well written and directed Anthology, in which the acting is tight and well preformed. Great music in the back ground that helps to build tension… It leaves me to say, yes again another success by Geno McGahee and the hard working team at Xposse Productions…
