Fans of TV shows such as “America’s Got Talent”, “Dancing With the Stars” and “The Voice” will surely love this film called “Danger in the Manger”. It is a family holiday movie that is loaded to the gills with talented singers, mostly children. This is an English movie so everyone’s got that cool English accent.

It is the story of a group of schoolchildren who want to sing in the national competition “A Song For Christmas”. The competition is run like the shows I previously mentioned with judging and a big cash prize. To get to the competition they must be able to convince their new schoolteacher Mr. Peterson played by David Tennant. Fear not because they have the classroom aide, Mr Poppy, on their side. Mr. Popppy is played by Marc Wooten. He is crazy and full of mischief more so than even the ragtag bunch of kids who he is encouraging to sing. They eventually embark on a road-trip across England to participate in the contest but the trip is not an easy one. They encounter many obstacles such as a huge cliff and the ocean itself. Did I mention they are traveling with a donkey too?

The kids are absolutely hysterical and charming. “High five” to the casting department. Throughout the entire movie is music. Not cheesy production music but top notch performances by many of the children. The movie is primarily aimed at young kids with its goofy humor and far out situations but any adult will enjoy watching this fun family film. It has wonderful performances particularly at the end of the film. Not one of the best films I’ve seen but certainly worth a watch.

Can the frazzled group get to the competition in time? Are these kiddos good enough singers? You be the judge as these youngsters struggle to get to the show on time and compete against some of England’s most talented performers.. I recommend this DVD to any family who enjoys a good holiday film. Make some hot chocolate and cookies and sit down with the kids to enjoy “Danger in the Manger”

Rating: 7.7/10 – “A nice family night flick”
