Syngenor (1990) – HORROR MOVIE REVIEW

Geno

By Geno McGahee

I love a good monster movie and you can’t do much better than the 1990 gem, SYNGENOR. I don’t think that gem is a strong enough word. This film was so much fun that I wanted to cheer and I did cheer. I was cheering for the monsters. SYNGENOR is a sequel to a 1980 film called “SCARED TO DEATH,” and this is a rare occasion when the follow up is better than the first.

We start out with an evil businessman bringing a coworker and two girls to the basement of the corporation building. He then unleashes the Syngenor on them. They are reptilian and huge and were created by this corporation for warfare in the desert. They didn’t need water and were difficult to kill. They had no issues ripping the two girls and poor dude to death. This film didn’t wait very long to show the monster and then they showed us multiple monsters. Syngenors were everywhere.

One syngenor is loose in the city and is doing some damage, but the evil president of the corporation, Carter Brown (David Gale), decides to release the rest. Carter Brown may be the most over the top horror villain of all time and I couldn’t get enough of him. He was hilarious. He kept injecting himself with syngenor juice and kept getting crazier and crazier and loved his creations as he released them on people.

This film brings in elements of PREDATOR and C.H.U.D, but remains unique. It takes place “in the future”, but since it was 1990 when it was released and it’s now 2014, it felt like present day…if that makes sense. Did that make sense? It does to me. The Syngenors continue to raise hell and they can reproduce every 24 hours, making the situation very serious. Only a reporter and the daughter of the original creator of the monsters can stop these creatures from destroying the world.

Brown traps the reporter and his lady friend in his building and watches on as his monsters attempt to kill them. He is enjoying it a little too much. On top of that, he killed most of his employees, including the poor security guard. He just walked up to him and shot him in the head and then laughed manically. It was great.

Much like in C.H.U.D, I couldn’t stop myself for rooting for the monsters. I wanted the Syngenors to come out victorious. It wasn’t their fault that they were engineered for war. They look cool and there aren’t enough things that look cool in this world. I think that this movie knew this and gave us an ending that was very satisfying.

SYNGENOR is great. It was one of the most fun I’ve had watching a horror movie in a long, long time. I was cheering and laughing throughout. I can’t recommend this one enough.

Rating: 9/10
