Hatchet III (2013) – Slasher/Horror MOVIE REVIEW

By Chris Summerfield

So the third outing in this series sees Victor Crowley, (Kane Hodder) return to Honey Island swamp in which he haunts, night after night, slaughtering everyone who gets in his way…

This movie continues where the second climaxed, however we then witness a dazed, Marybeth (Danielle Harris), who is soaked in blood and armed with a gun, and carrying part of a skull, step in to the local police station, the sheriff being, Fowler (Zach Galligan) immediately arrests her and is the only suspect for the mass murder in the swamp.

Marybeth stating the urban legend, Victor Crawley is responsible for the massacre, though not believed.

There is one person who believes, Marybeth, that being Sheriff Fowler’s ex wife Amanda, (Caroline Williams) who works as a reporter, she has studied the legend of Crawley, and in the process has gained a reputation in journalism as a crank, in which frustrates her deeply.

She is eager to work on the story and prove Marybeth’s innocence and the fact that Crawley exists.

In the meantime the swamp has been sealed off and police forensic teams are collecting bodies, working in to the night, the time when the curse of Crawley returns and so the bloodbath begins…

Deputy Winslow (Robert Diago DoQui), is left in charge of the station and is horrified as he begins to receive reports of a massacre unfolding within the swamp. Amanda stating the only way to save his colleagues and break the curse of Crawley is by getting their hands upon the ashes of Thomas Crawley, and give them to Victor, though it would have to be Marybeth, who delivers them to him, since it was her bloodline that created the curse by killing Crawley originally, however the ashes are in the hands of, “Abbott the crazy,” (Sid Haig), a relative of Crawley. Mr Haig, as you are probably aware is a veteran in the movie industry and always great to watch, and in this movie plays his part extremely well, playing a rather suspicious, half crazy, blunt Abbott.

Meanwhile in the swamps, Sheriff Fowler’s team is joined by a Swat Team, lead by, Hawes, (Derek Mawes) a hard talking leader, armed to the teeth and determined to stop Crawley, but how can a ghost be stopped with bullets?

Crawley is one mean, giant of an antagonist that is ruthless and knows how to decapitate and dismember folks in eye watering ways. The special effects team just breathtaking.

As for the climax… Well I am not going to give anything away.

It leaves me to say, this movie has plenty of bullets, blood and gore, and may I say, when I first heard they were making a third instalment I was horrified, as I thought the second brought closure, however may I take my words back, as this third outing is exciting, tensed and damned right gory, a triumph… Though saying that I do feel closure as come with this movie or will the curse return? We will just have to wait and see… Now if you have not seen this movie and you enjoy the gory type, DO NOT MISS THIS ONE… 8/10
