My Pet Zombie by Sherry Snider (Illustrations by Aixa Vera) – BOOK REVIEW

I enjoy sitting down with my son and reading with him. Being a horror guy, it’s great to stumble across a book that is geared towards children but incorporates a horror theme. My son “Munch,” is only 8 years-old…so he’s not exactly ready for most horror films, but he can certainly handle “MY PET ZOMBIE,” by Sherry Snider with illustrations by Aixa Vera.

The book is as advertised. There is a child that has a pet zombie. It was pretty amusing how a zombie was put into this role and it worked out pretty well. The zombie proved loyal and was able to be everything a dog could be and more.

The care it takes to keep a zombie and the benefits are discussed, leading to a warm ending that every parent and child can enjoy. My son cringed at certain parts and was amused at others, which is the point of a horror book for kids. Sherry Snider approaches this book with a good sense of humor about the sub-genre in horror and makes it kid-friendly. My son’s thoughts were that: “Some of it was kind of gross, like the bucket of guts part.” Yes, the bucket of guts was gross.

Horror fans, this is a must have if you have children. You have to start them early on the greatness that is horror and the fun that are zombies. MY PET ZOMBIE is one hell of a start. I recommend it!
