Wreckage (2010) – Movie Review

I had read a lot of less than stellar reviews of “Wreckage” but nonetheless when a horror film is released unless it’s of the torture-porn variety (i.e. SAW), I delve in regardless of what critics say…and movies like “Wreckage” are precisely why.

In the beginning, we see a drug addicted mother obtaining her fix from her thug boyfriend. When he begins roughing up the older of her two sons, the youngest takes out a gun and kills both their mother and the thug.
Fast forward in time, and four friends are going out together. The newly engaged couple Jared (Mike Erwin) and Jessica (Kelly Kruger) are joined by their friends and a feisty couple Rick (Aaron Paul) and Sheila (Ruthanne Gibson). They end up at a scrap yard filled with junk vehicles as Rick shoots his gun in the distance. The girls and Jared ask him to stop but he takes one more shot which ends up shooting Jessica. Sheila screams at Rick for his stupidity as she puts pressure on the wound. Jared takes off running to the police station.

Skeptical Sheriff Macabee (Roger Perry) enlists his officers to go check it out. When they all arrive, Jared’s friends are missing. The police automatically guess gag until blood is seen on the ground. A search goes into high move when one of the gang is found hanging dead.
They quickly realize the killer stalks their path and rather than running they all stand ground with everything they have access to.

Though the film opens slowly it picks up speed and the cast of unique characters stand out and produce a memorable piece. This isn’t an art house find or something that fans of pretentious work will enjoy. Sadly, pretention is confused with intelligence and often people dismiss any film with a formula as dumb and worthless.
It’s irritating to see reviews of “horror” sites which applaud only movies that have the look of an old French film while dismissing what traditional horror is all about.
Overall, “Wreckage” doesn’t disappoint. It’s intended to be a fun film and it most certainly is.

Scared Stiff Rating: 6.5/10
