Robocop 2 (1990) – Movie Review – Violent Sequel

In 1987, ROBOCOP came out and it was violent, over the top, and fantastic. So, three years later, the cyborg cop is back and we have twice the violence to compensate for the lesser script and story.

OCP, the evil industry that controls the police, is still trying to improve on the Robocop design and replace the police with a better force. Unfortunately, the experiments have gone wrong, but a psychologist has a theory that the wrong subjects are being chosen for the human aspects of the crime fighting robots. She gets into the boss’s ear and pants and now a new robotic force will be unleashed, but this one has a drug addiction.

“Nuke” is a drug that is being distributed by cult leader, Cain (Tom Noonan), one of the most infamous murders and criminals in Detroit. Nuke has taken over. It is cheap and effective and many of the cops are on it, making it a difficult thing to overcome. When Robocop (Peter Weller) is reprogrammed to be more sensitive, it makes matters worse. In one humorous scene, he reads the Miranda rights to a corpse. Thankfully, he gets fixed and it’s back to business.

Robocop nearly kills Cain and with the villain on life support, OCP pulls the plug and makes a new Robocop with his brain. Now the city must deal with a bad Robocop running on Nuke. It leads to a violent conclusion and showdown between the two cyborgs.

ROBOCOP 2 is not a deep film. It is a violent thrill ride and that is the point. You walk away feeling sort of empty, but you can’t say too many bad words about it. The death count is high, the bad guy is pretty good, and it keeps the feeling of the original. If you are a fan of the original, you will enjoy this. It’s not nearly as clever, but it does entertain. I recommend it.

Scared Stiff Rating: 6/10.
